For as long as man has been around, he has employed some use of earth
as a building material. We are all certainly familiar with the Native
American-built pueblos of the southwest and the Pantheon (among other
structures) in Rome. Continuing the tradition through present day, modern
earth builders have employed primarily the techniques of adobe block and
rammed earth. But both processes of construction require large amounts
of time and strenuous labor. Today, however, the earth-building industry
is witnessing a revolution. Imagine a large building with two-foot thick
walls being poured in just a few hours with compressive strengths that
far exceed industry standards for rammed earth or adobe block. This is
now the reality of architect and former builder, Michael Frerking. With
the advent of the pouring process, creative architectural design possibilities
become limitless. The traditional southwest style has, indeed, been revolutionized
by the ability to pour earth.
